19" LCD Monitors Dominate In 1Q08
While Screens Get Larger In China
June 4, 2008
China's 1Q 2008 total computer
monitor shipments were 3.0 million, down 6.8% YOY. In the CRT category,
shipments dropped to 296 thousand, down 61.5% YOY. By contrast, shipments in
the LCD category reached 2.7 million, up 10.1% YOY.
Total computer monitor
revenues were 4.8 billion Yuan, up by 0.8% YOY. Revenues of LCDs reached 4.6

display sizes.
The 19" size was the most
popular, reaching shipments of 1.86 million with a shipment share of 67.5%
in 1Q08. Chinese consumer demand drove its popularity, and the LCD supply
chain was also optimized to produce and deliver the 19" size. Above-19" LCD
shipments reached 438 thousand, up an astounding 544% YOY, but started from
a small base in 1Q07.

China's consumer,
government, financial services, and telecom sectors had the largest shares
for LCD displays. LCD shipments for electric power, logistics and
petrochemical industries grew the fastest, but started from a smaller base.
LCD display performance
continued to improve in 1Q08. Contrast ratios have reached 20,000:1, while
response times for mainstream LCDs are at 5ms and high-end LCDs are down to
2ms.
CCID Consulting sees future
integration of home entertainment functions into LCD monitors, as the
"digital home" is still in its infancy. High definition and TV functionality
for LCD monitors will be requirements, as larger sized LCD monitors may
serve as a second TV. Equivalent or larger sized LCD monitors (in the 22" to
26" categories) already have higher definition than some of their LCD TV
counterparts (in the 20" range).
