June 4, 2008
China's 1Q 2008 notebook

ratio continues to improve, notebooks are growing at the expense of, and
substituting for, the desktop PC.

Commercial shipments (including large, medium and small enterprises) grew
less at 33.5% YOY, but reaching a larger 1.1 million units.
By commercial industry,
media industry shipments grew strongly at 54.1%. The 2008 Beijing Olympics
demanded investment in mobile offices for real-time reporting. Health care,
transportation, and logistics also showed considerable growth.
By screen size, the 13.3"
widescreen segment leaped 157.2% YOY. Vendors who were successful in this
segment included Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Apple's MacBook Air and Lenovo's
ThinkPad X300 are good examples of products adopting the 13.3" screen.

Lenovo dominated China's
notebook market. However, HP had strong China growth, especially in the SME
sector. At the same time, new vendors were targeting specific niches, such
as Malata, MSI, and Loongson.
Notebook offerings in China
continue to get thinner, lighter, and more diverse. Notebook segmentation
includes ultra-portable to very low-priced to feature-rich desktop
replacement, making the market attractive even to new entrants.
